First aired on November 10, 1995: Host John Googins and
cameraman Ray Berry trekked down to Redding, California, to take a behind-the-scenes
look at KRCR-TV Channel 7, the Northstate's ABC affiliate, as well as visit
colleague and segment producer Mike Summers while he was interning there.
Mike gave the two a tour of the studios and newsroom of the station and gave
explanations on how things operate. John would then interview the key players
in the success of News Channel 7 at the time including then-sports
director and Redding legend Mike Mangas (now lead male news anchor), then-news
director Gary Gunter (who replaced Cal Hunter and was later replaced by female
anchor Jennifer Scarborough, appearing briefly in the first video), anchors
Sandra Geist and Warren Wright, weather anchor Katy Brown (now sports director
at KATU Channel 2 in Portland, Oregon) and finally (in much of the program) the
hilarious Rich Eisen, who went on to ESPN and later NFL Network. Summers credits
Eisen for getting him his first big break!
Mike Summers has since acquired Action Video Entertainment from John Googins
in the spring of 2005 and, upon graduating from College of the Siskiyous in May
2005, was hired as master control operator at Sainte Television Group in Chico,
which owns KCVU-DT FOX 20 (formerly FOX 30), MyTV NorCal (KRVU My 21 of Chico,
formerly UPN 21, and KEMY My 33 of Eureka) and three Spanish stations. He
was named Employee of the Year by Sainte in December 2009. Plans are in the
works for an In Focus revival as well as a special similar to this one,
but looking at FOX 20.
Special thanks to KRCR-TV in Redding for allowing this special to be filmed
at the facilities. Original News Channel 7 logo is courtesy of KRCR-TV.
