Born in Mt. Shasta
in 1970 and raised primarily in Mt. Shasta and McCloud for 30 years,
Mike is truly a Siskiyou County native. He's been in the media and
entertainment genre for over 20 years. His mother even swears that
his first words were not "mommy" or "daddy", but "Come on down!"
Those were the words first made famous by the late Johnny Olsen of
TV's The Price Is Right. His family knew this was what he
wanted to do all his life.
At age 10, he
started out as an actor playing The Cowardly Lion in a fourth grade
version of The Wizard Of Oz at Sisson Middle School in Mt.
Shasta. He was inspired to go into television news when he toured
both KHSL-TV studios in Chico, the original East 4th Street studio
(now a real estate office) in 1983 and the current Silverbell Road
location in north Chico in 1984, both courtesy of popular news
reporter Rick Rigsby (who's now at Texas A&M University). His
broadcasting career began on the radio at age 16 when he was high
school reporter for KWSD-AM in Mt. Shasta (1987-1988). After his
radio stint was halted, he went on to graduate from McCloud High
School in 1990.
His television
career started in college with Ray Berry's broadcast communications
courses at College of the Siskiyous in Weed in 1991, where he met
John Googins. He got his first major television job in 1995
interning at KRCR-TV Channel 7
in Redding, getting the job through future ESPN And NFL Network
anchor Rich Eisen. After spending eight months interning, he moved
back into radio in the summer of 1996 being hired as board operator
at KMJC Radio in Mt. Shasta, running San Francisco Giants game in
the old East Alma Street studio (now a CPA office). In 1997, he was
hired as on-air talent and program director at KWHO-FM Radio in Mt.
Shasta. Station owner Tom Huth credited Mike for the hire of
longtime Redding television news anchor Cal Hunter to run KWHO's
sister station KBLF-AM in Red Bluff. He would receive his vocational
certification from C.O.S. in 1999 in the field of Media
Communications, the first ever to do so. While at KWHO, he was hired
to replace Jack Hoffman as ad designer at Northland Cable
Television in Mt. Shasta in January of 2001. Mike designed ads
on Channel 3 and Channel 29 in Mt. Shasta, Channel 6 and Channel 14
in Yreka since during that time.
While working at
Northland, Mike tried his hand at coaching high school girls
softball, uncharted territory for him after many years as a sports
announcer. He served as assistant softball coach at McCloud High
School for two seasons (2001-2002) under head coach Greta Jones,
where the team won the NSCIF Division VI Championship in 2001. Not
bad for someone who had never coached a day in his life. He hopes to
coach again in the future. All in all, Mike Summers has proven to be
a success both in the field and on the field.
On April 15,
2005, Mike officially took over Action Video Entertainment
operations from John Googins. On May 20, 2005, he finally graduated
from College of the Siskiyous with an associate degree in Media
Communications. Then after a 4 1/2 stint at Northland Cable
Television, Mike accepted a job at Sainte Television Group of Chico,
owners of KCVU-TV FOX 30 (now KCVU-DT FOX 20), KRVU-TV UPN
21 (now MyTV Northern
California 21 Chico/33 Eureka) and KUCO-TV Univision 27 on June
20, 2005. He currently works as their master operator and he aspires
to move up in the future. The company has since added new two
stations in Chico: KXVU-TV
Telemundo 17 and KKTF-TV Telefutura 35 in Chico and two new
stations in Medford, Oregon: KFBI-TV My 48 and KMCW-TV
Telemundo 14. On December 16, 2009, he was named Sainte's Employee
of the Year. He currently lives in the Chico area.
Mike was also an
avid wrestling fan and was involved with a project called
Continental Championship Wrestling, based in Medford, Oregon. He is
a huge sports fan and is currently working on a project to help
bring a professional baseball team (and stadium) back to Medford,
Oregon, called the "Golden Baseball League Medford Expansion
Project". It has since been renamed the new Southern Oregon
Timberjacks franchise.
Politically, he
unashamedly admits to being a Ronald Reagan Conservative and is now
an Independent, leaning more to the right. He is also a supporter of
Yes on 8/Protect Marriage in California and has thrown his support
behind the Southern Oregon Meth Project, a program dedicated to
educating people and children on the dangers of methamphetamine use
and what to do to combat it.
He launched his
current website, MikeSummers.org, in 2007 and is always
looking for new opportunities. So check back for future
updates!
